Today Rep. Earl Hilliard, Jr. announced that he is sponsoring a public health care forum on the provisions of President Obama’s new health care now. The event will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, at the Avondale Public Library. Rep. Hilliard said:

“The new health care law is a great step forward. However, if our objective is for everyone to have the same, high quality, affordable health care, the bill doesn’t cover everybody, isn’t the same for everybody, and may not be affordable for many people. Therefore, it’s a glass both half full and half empty. When I am elected, my job will be as an advocate for its improvement.”

Montgomery – ForestPAC, the Political Action Committee of the Alabama Forestry Association, has endorsed District 60 State Representative Earl Hilliard, Jr. in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for the 7th Congressional District in the June 1 Democratic Primary.

Chris Isaacson, Executive Vice President of the Alabama Forestry Association, said he believes Rep. Hilliard will be mindful and supportive of the economic presence and impact that forestry has in the 7th District.

“The 7th Congressional District is home to five pulp and paper mills, 16 sawmills, and over 4 million acres of the state’s most productive forests. Representative Hilliard understands the vital role that forests and the forest industry play in the lives and economic well being of residents of the 7th District,” Isaacson said. “We believe that as Congressman, he will be a champion for his constituents and for the businesses and industry that drive his District’s economy.”

In accepting the group’s endorsement, Rep. Hilliard said, “This endorsement shows not only that I have support in Alabama’s business community, but also in Alabama’s conservation community. As much as any industry in Alabama, the forestry industry is sensitive to the needs of our environment. To put it in simple terms, if the environment hurts our trees, it hurts their business. I was happy to have been chosen a 2009 Legislative Conservationist of the Year by the Alabama Wildlife Federation and I am happy to have been endorsed by the Alabama Forestry Association. It’s nice to have friends in conservation join our team as we push for victory on June 1st.”

Rep. Hilliard was a 2008 delegate for President Barack Obama. He currently serves as the State Representative for Alabama District 60, representing parts of Western Birmingham, and as a Vice Chairman of the Labor and Economic Development Committee with the National Conference of State Legislators. Recognized as a leader amongst his peers, Rep. Hilliard received the 2009 Rising Star and 2009 Father of the Year awards from the Birmingham Area chapter of the NAACP, was named a 2009 Legislative Conservationist of the Year by the Alabama Wildlife Foundation, and was selected as the 2008 Freshman Legislator of the Year by the Alabama House Democratic Caucus. He is married, has two children and is a member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church of North Pratt.

The 7th Congressional District includes all of Greene, Choctaw, Sumter, Marengo, Dallas, Wilcox, Perry and Hale Counties. It also includes parts of Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, Clarke, and Pickens Counties.

April 28, 2010

Trussville, AL – The National Association of Letter Carriers, Vulcan Branch 530, has unanimously endorsed Rep. Hilliard in the race for the open seat in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District.

Speaking on behalf of the 800 Vulcan Branch members, Local 530 President, Antonia Shields, praised Rep. Hilliard’s commitment to preserving a quality standard of life and protecting jobs. “There are some serious budget issues facing the United States Postal Service and we know Rep. Hilliard’s record of working to solve problems, protect jobs and dedication to preserving a 6-day postal delivery week will make Rep. Hilliard a strong Congressman.”

Rep. Hilliard responded to the unanimous vote with a pledge to take the concerns of Letter Carriers and all constituents to Washington, DC, where he will seek funding for the programs needed to protect jobs, and advance the economic interests of the 7th Congressional District.

“Our campaign continues to pick up momentum and I am proud to have the support of the Letter Carriers. I look forward to working with you to preserve the service you provide to our community and commit to preserving jobs throughout the district. If Congress eliminates Saturday mail delivery not only will we lose more jobs in a down economy, but it will have an adverse effect on our small businesses who rely upon the United States Postal Service,” stated Rep. Hilliard.

“I’m about getting things done and the hard working men and women who haven chosen to throw their support behind me – the same hard working men and women who build our schools, hospitals, and business centers; who maintain and operate our nuclear and West Alabama power plants; who patrol our streets and neighborhoods, keeping our families and communities safe; and who work hard everyday to provide for a better life for their families – want a Congressman who they can trust will work on their behalf to get things done for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. I am this person. When elected, I will continue to be responsive to the needs of my district and will not forget the outpouring of support these hard working men and women have shown,” stated Rep.
System Council U-19 is made up of 9 local affiliates and represents approximately 3,000 covered employees of Alabama Power and Southern Nuclear in West and South Alabama. “We’re the hands on people who actually make and deliver the energy that powers our communities,” stated Bill Fredericks, Business Manager of System Council U-19.

“We have all been impressed by Rep. Hilliard, and although we normally don’t come out so early and get behind a candidate, after meeting Rep. Hilliard we felt compelled to support an outstanding candidate in a crowded field,” continued Fredericks.

National Union of Law Enforcement Associations (NULEA)

Representing police officers, deputy sheriffs, correction officers, detectives and other law enforcement support personnel, NULEA is a national organization that has chosen to join with other public safety officials in unanimously endorsing Rep. Hilliard’s candidacy for the open seat in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. Citing their reasons for endorsement, NULEA President, Don McDonald, referenced Rep. Hilliard’s commitment to public safety and education.
